Wild Edge Skull Taxidermy began as a solution to years of trial and tribulation in composting, scraping, boiling, and power washing skulls. The ultimate method for cleaning skulls is through Wild Edge’s new ecosystem of Dermestid (Dermestes maculatus) beetles.
Dermestid beetles are a naturally occurring species of scavenger beetle found across North America, which continue to be the preferred method of skull preparation in museum and university collections around the world. Colonies are capable of cleaning skulls through the process of skeletonization. This species feeds only on animal flesh, giving the process many advantages over other preparation methods. Dermestid beetles remove every ounce of flesh and organic material from the deepest recesses of the skull, without leaving a single mark. This is especially important in maintaining the integrity of the nasal cavity. Boiled skulls are typically left with weak suture lines, loosened teeth, discoloration, and antler shrinkage.

Our Process
If you are looking for an easy way to have your trophy cleaned and preserved, consider sending it to Wild Edge Skulls!
We will have your skull cleaned, degreased and whitened allowing you to display it in a unique, professional manner. Shipping skulls: Skulls must be frozen, wrapped and taped in several layers of plastic trash bags and placed in a cardboard or Styrofoam box. Make sure to add some sort of padding in the box so that your skull is not damaged in transit. Skulls should be shipped to Wild Edge Inc. with priority mail which usually takes 2-3 days. Preparing skulls: Skulls can be shipped with or without the skin on them. Added cost of $25-50.00 applies to skulls that have not been skinned or fleshed. The skull must also be accompanied by an identification tag to verify the legitimacy of your trophy. When your skull is complete, it will be carefully packaged and shipped via priority mail, or by the shipment method of your choice. You will receive a confirmation email with a tracking number. ** We ensure that we take all necessary steps to completely free your skull of all beetles before it is shipped!** |
